PM Modi told listeners in one of his Sunday broadcasts called Mann Ki Baat or Thoughts from the Mind, that post obtaining this GI tag certification, Kashmiri saffron has already launched in a Dubai supermarket with its exports set to receive a massive boost in the future. This was unveiled in UAE markets throughout the UAE-India Food Security Summit 2020 held over two days in the city on the 8th and 9th of December, 2020. The PM has stated that Kashmiri saffron is known worldwide for its medicinal attributes and its distinct aroma along with its dark and deep color and thick/long threads which greatly scale up its overall medicinal value.
Al Maya Group is the entity promoting Kashmiri saffron with a GI tag and its Partner and Group Director, Kamal Vachani, stated that the company is hugely excited to receive a mention in the radio broadcast of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while adding that saffron is widely used throughout both Arabic and Indian dishes and hence the company is pleased to retail Kashmiri saffron throughout its stores in the UAE. The United Nations WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organisation) has stated that GI (Geographical Indication) is a sign used for products with a particular geographical origin with a reputation/attributes derived from the origin itself.
